April 18 Flu Update

There was a ton of news today, on two topics.....the new vaccine from Purdue and the story below about 65 million Indonesians.

An official in Indonesia says that 65 million Indonesians are at risk if the virus mutates.

Sweden lowered its bird flu alert level.

Orange;

Interesting correction in your article on the estimate of the number of Indonesians that might fall ill, or get infected. A few days ago, Heru Setijanto estimated the number ridiculously low, at five million, now Bayu Krisnamurthi estimates it more realistically at 65 million, or 30% of the population. One can assume this is an acknowledgement of an error and a correction on their part, based on most world wide expert anticipated influenza attack rates. Interesting…

What I really find curious is why they insistent are holding the “ pandemic emergency drill” on the island of Bali, where it seems all of their released strain samples have originated to date. I do not believe any samples have been released from any of the other province locations, especially where family clusters have been suspected. Why not hold and integrated exercise and include the Baten, Jakarta, Java, Riau, Sumatra and Acah provinces, where most of the actual bird flu cases have occurred ? In view of the fact that most bird flu patients there so far, seek medical treatment in hospitals only after being treated at small clinics or by doctors who operate in their homes, I wonder how this is being addressed in a mass casualty sense ?

A person really has to wonder what health minister Siti Fadilah Supari is concealing from the world scientists and health leaders. No wonder she doesn’t want NAMRU-2 around.
